Daniel Taylor is a Sony Classical recording artist, Artistic Director and Conductor of the Trinity Choir as well as the Choir and Orchestra of the Theatre of Early Music. Daniel is one of the most sought-after countertenors in the world. Recognition of Daniel’s work can be seen in the Grammy, Gramophone, Juno, Opus, CBC-SRC and Adisq Awards. He was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Medal for service to music. In 2021, Daniel was named as an Officer of the Order of Canada. 

 

Daniel appears on more than 120 recordings which include Bach Cantatas/Monteverdi Choir/Gardiner/ Deutsche Grammophone Archiv and SDG; Renaissance duets with Bowman/Chance, Hollywood Actors Ralph Fiennes and Jeremy Irons/BIS; Handel’s Rinaldo with Bartoli/AAM/Hogwood/Decca; Before Bach/Collegium Vocale/Herreweghe /Harmonia Mundi; Sakamoto’s pop- opera Life/Sony; Bach Cantatas/Bach Collegium Japan/Suzuki/BIS; five recordings of Handel’s Messiah, with the Montreal Symphony/Nagano/ Universal, Kammerchor Stuttgart/ Bernius/Carus, Handel & Haydn Society/Christophers/Coro, with American Bach Soloists/Thomas (Koch )and a CD/DVD with Tafelmusik/Taurins/Bravo Television. Daniel has recorded the CD/DVD of Bach’s B minor Mass with the Ensemble Orchestral Paris/Nelson/EMI Virgin and with the Kammerchor Stuttgart /Bernius/Carus. Daniel’s extraordinary series of recordings for SONY include The Voice of Bach and Come Again Sweet Love as well with his award-winning choral ensemble, The Trinity Choir. Daniel is Director of Historical Performance and Associate Professor of Opera, Early Music and Voice Studies. 

 

Daniel’s professional operatic debut was at the Glyndebourne Festival followed by his North American debut at the New York Metropolitan Opera. He continued to the Rome Opera, Welsh National, Canadian Opera, Opera North, in Munich and at the Edinburgh Festival. He has joined orchestras including San Francisco, Los Angeles, London, Lisbon, Cleveland, Toronto, New York Philharmonic, as well as the Dallas Symphony and the Israel Philharmonic. His long association with the late Director Jonathan Miller included Handel’s Rodelinda/EMI Virgin and Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. Daniel appears on two soundtracks for Cirque de Soleil: TORUK - The Story of Avatar (title role) and TOTEM for Universal. 

 

Recent engagements also include Gluck’s Orfeo and Handel’s Rinaldo at the Teatro Colon Buenos Aires, the World Premiere of Robert Lepage’s production of Ades’ The Tempest and recitals at Lincoln Centre, the BBC Proms, Barcelona’s Palau de la Musica, Wigmore Hall and the Forbidden City Concert Hall Beijing. Daniel's appearance in a video of Vivaldi with the contemporary dancer Andrea Peña has had more 400,000 views. Daniel has appeared on German television for the Prime Minister of Germany, on Spanish television for the Queen of Spain and in a recital for the King and Queen of Sweden and at a first nations pow-wow. Daniel has sung for American Presidents and at the request of Governors General and Prime Ministers of Canada for events with an estimated 5 million viewers and listeners.
